From the time you wake up until the time you go to bed and even while you are asleep, your mouth is hard at work creating a list of things you need to do to prevent dental disease.
Drs. Resnick and Kessler are always ready to offer some simple preventative solutions that will help ensure you win the dental disease battle.
• Quit smoking if you can. And if you can’t right now, brush and floss at least three times a day. Some patients have been successful in cutting back on the amount of cigarettes they smoke by brushing after a couple of cigarettes. Dr. Kessler has given this kind of advice as part of his highly successful Agoura Hills dental hygiene program.
“Dr. Kessler told me about brushing my teeth right after I smoked. It worked so well that I eventually quit smoking altogether. Now I get my teeth whitened at his Agoura Hills office as a gift to myself. I can’t thank him enough for giving me that one little tip that changed so much for me and my family.” — Brian Kazijian
o Brush your teeth AND your tongue
o Massage your gums – Stimulating the gums helps prevent receding gums, gum disease and cavities.
o Oral irrigation – Oral irrigations reach under the gum line. Dr. Kessler and Dr. Resnick recommend oral irrigation for many patients who have struggled with gum disease.
o Your food and drink – Sugar, acidity and fibrous foods can be the enemy of your mouth. Cutting back on your sugar intake, not eating lemons raw and not crunching ice can help prevent the breakdown of the enamel and gum line.
• Milk, cheese and yogurt – are rich in calcium and low in acidity, wearing less on the teeth
• Green tea – has a polyphenal antioxidant plant compound that reduces plaque
• Vegetables – vitamin A from carrots, sweet potato and broccoli help actually build tooth enamel and crunch vegetables help clean gums
• Onions – contain antibacterial sulfur compounds and kill various form of bacteria when eaten raw
“I didn’t realize that there were so many things out there that are the enemy of my mouth. (laughs). Dr. Resnick and I had a great discussion about dental health and some awesome prevention guidance. I’ve gotten my kids to eat vegetables a little more. Just a little but that was a lot more than before. They love Dr. Resnick. She’s such a great dentist.” — Gene Talmot
“Coming to see us on a regular basis is one of the best things you can do for your dental health. Reviewing your full dental picture helps us stay ahead of any issues. Once you get on track, the rate of dental health issues you face will drop significantly.” — Dr. Darren Kessler, Agour Hills dentist
